by Island Rangoli 21 Jul 2025

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as the Ganesh Festival/Vinayaka Chaturthi, is widely celebrated and significant Hindu festival observed by devotees around the world. This Festival is dedicated to Lord Ganesha symbolizing prosperity, wisdom, and remover of obstacles. It marks the birth of the Lord Ganesha.

Lord Ganesh

Lord Ganesh, son of Shivaji and Maa Parvati - the beloved deity of Hinduism, holds a special place in the hearts of millions worldwide revered as the remover of obstacles (Vighnaharta).

His Large rounded body signifies abundance and the ability to overcome obstacles.

The Days of Ganesh Chaturthi

Starting on Chaturthi, the fourth day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Bhadrapada, the celebration usually lasts for ten days. The primary customs consist of:

·     Installation of Ganesh Idols:  Devotees take Ganesh idols home and  arrange them in exquisitely adorned pandals.

·  Pooja(worship): Prayers, flowers, and sweets specially Modak are offered, among other rites. To commemorate Lord Ganesha, devotees chant mantras and perform devotional songs.

·     Visarjan (Immersion): On the last day, the idol is immensed after being carried in a large procession to a body of water.

This ceremony represents the cycle of creation and disintegration as well as the deity's return to his celestial home.
